Abstract Painting: Taking Flowers, 2017

Mexican painter, Alex Lazard is best known for using large canvases or large pieces of linoleum — a very rigid material that allows him to put a lot of material load to his work. This turns his paintings into a presentation of mixed media that involves modeling with great textures, the scraping of the graphic, and the use of oil inside the painting. Mixing, layer by layer, on the flexible canvas placed on the floor, abstract figurative elements give shape to “scenarios of everyday life,” as described by Lazard.

Lazard approaches  each painting with a different subject, usually starting with a blur and defining the path throughout the process. Starting without any kind of sketch and seeing how the process of a painting manifests itself naturally. “I consider that there is an inclination or some opening of the unconscious with physical work where elements are taken that I have kept since childhood, trips, experiences, feelings,” making his work a proposal loaded with symbolism, spirituality and mysticism.

Influenced by primitive cultures, Mexican pre-Hispanic art, African art, German expressionist art, Basquiat’s freedom, the material of Antoni Tápies, and his Jewish background, Lazard gives a genuine proposal influenced by different sources. The way he works with so much freedom seems to very subtle and harmless, but his work has a lot of load and content.
